BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards 2015
Last weekend I had the privilege of photographing the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award Semi Final at the Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal. I think this is the fourth time I have been asked to do it and I'm always amazed at how talented these young musicians are and how confident they are on stage. Everyone involved with the production of the awards is a pleasure to deal with and it's always a fabulous night.
Although it wasn't a requirement of the shoot, I did take a few backstage shots this year, just because I wanted to record the atmosphere of this part of the night which is always full of excitement and nerves.
I always take a portrait of each of the ten nominees and then some live shots during the performance. The ten acts were Talisk, Jacob Riddall, Wildwood Kin, Roseanne Reid, The Barber Sisters, Cup O' Joe, Iona Grace Fyfe, Will Allen, Kitty MacFarlane and Reely Ceol.
Everyone comes back on stage at the end of the night for a finale which this year was led by Joe Broughton and Paloma Trigas from the Urban Folk Quartet who had spent the weekend with the nominees offering help and valuable advice about the music industry.
Four acts were chosen on the night to go through to the main BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Final in April. They will be announced on Mark Radcliffe's Folk Show on Wednesday night (4th February) along with the rest of the nominees for the main Folk Award competition.
